When we talk about continuous improvement in healthcare, it’s about much more than efficiency, quality, or productivity. In hospitals and healthcare facilities, people are always at the center. Good processes create flexibility, reduce unnecessary effort, and enable staff to spend more time caring for their patients. That is exactly the impression I (Lara Ferrari, developer of kyro software) gained during my visit to Hospital do GRAACC in Brazil.
GRAACC (Grupo de Apoio ao Adolescente e à Criança com Câncer) is one of the most renowned pediatric oncology facilities in Brazil. The organization treats children and adolescents with cancer and funds a significant portion of its work through donations, partnerships, and sponsors. The goal is clear: to provide young patients with the best possible medical care and support.
After just a short time on site, it becomes clear how dedicated the staff are to their work. Doctors, nurses, therapists, and many other staff members often accompany children and families over long periods of time. For many patients, the hospital becomes an important part of their lives for months or even years.
It is precisely in such an environment that the importance of well-functioning processes becomes apparent. Because every minute lost to unnecessary coordination, waiting times, or administrative hurdles is a minute lost elsewhere—not just for the staff, but above all for the children and their families.
Continuous Improvement in Healthcare with a Clear Goal
To support the organization on its path toward continuous improvement, GRAACC collaborates with the Kaizen Institute Brazil.
As part of a sponsored Lean and improvement program, processes are analyzed, challenges are identified, and improvements are developed together with the staff. The goal is not simply to become faster. Rather, it is about allocating resources where they create the greatest benefit for patients.
This is precisely the core of successful process optimization in healthcare. Every improvement should help make employees’ daily work easier while simultaneously improving patient care.
In this context, continuous improvement means removing obstacles, making workflows more understandable, and making the teams’ daily work easier. This is exactly where the kyro software comes into play.
How kyro Supports On-Site Teams
As part of the program, kyro is used as a central platform for continuous improvement. Teams identify challenges throughout their processes, analyze root causes, and develop concrete improvement measures. At the same time, this creates transparency regarding which issues are currently being addressed, what progress has been made, and where further action is needed.
Such approaches to continuous improvement in hospitals help identify challenges early on, systematically understand their causes, and sustainably develop hospital processes.
Currently, kyro provides support in the following areas, among others:
- Recording and analyzing challenges along the processes
- Structuring and prioritizing opportunities for improvement
- Clustering problems and causes
- Transparent tracking of improvement measures
- Recording and developing competencies
- Supporting teams in continuous improvement in their daily work
What is particularly impressive is that improvement takes place directly where the work is performed every day. Employees are actively involved and help shape the further development of their processes themselves.
Step by step, this creates an organization that continuously learns and evolves. It is precisely this interplay of employees, methods, and technology that is a central component of lean management in healthcare.
The ultimate goal always remains the same: less administrative burden for the organization and more time for caring for children and families.
People Make the Difference
The visit to GRAACC was very emotional for me personally. On the wards, you encounter very young children – sometimes even babies. You see families facing enormous challenges. At the same time, you sense hope, professionalism, and a shared determination to give the children the best possible chance everywhere you look.
That is precisely why GRAACC’s staff do work that goes far beyond medical care. They support children and families during one of the most difficult phases of their lives. I was deeply impressed by the level of commitment, passion, and dedication with which they do this.
During my visit, there were also conversations that will stay with me. Several staff members personally thanked me for the opportunity to work with kyro.
We provided GRAACC with the kyro software free of charge for the duration of the project. And after my visit, it was immediately clear to me that this wouldn’t end with the conclusion of the current project. GRAACC will continue to be able to use the kyro software for free in the future.
If our platform can help reduce the organizational burden and give the teams more time to care for the children and families, then this is exactly the right place for it.
Making a Small Contribution Together
Many companies and organizations already support GRAACC as sponsors or partners. With this post, we too would like to draw attention to their important work.
Perhaps we can use our reach to make a small contribution and bring GRAACC to the attention of even more people.
If you’d like to learn more about the organization, you can find all the information here: https://graacc.org.br/
You can find all information regarding international donations here: https://graacc.org.br/doacao-internacional/
Every contribution helps ensure that children and adolescents with cancer receive the best possible treatment and care.
Continuous Improvement in Healthcare Creates Space for What Truly Matters
At GRAACC, it became clear to me once again what continuous improvement in healthcare is really about: not methods, software, or metrics. Rather, it’s about supporting people so they can do their important work even better.
When process optimization in healthcare helps give staff more time to care for children and families, that’s when improvement has its greatest impact.
